I-beam

A type pointer shaped like the capital letter I, used for entering and editing text. See also insertion point.

Icon

A small pictorial representation of a file, disk, menu, option or other object or feature.

Image Writer

Apple's discontinued line of dot matrix printers.

Initialize

To prepare a disk to receive information by organizing its surface into tracks and sectors; also known as format . If you initialize a disk with information on it, the information is erased.

Inkjet Printer

A printer that uses a reservoir of ink, usually a cartridge, and creates images on [paper by spraying small jets of ink onto the page.

Input

Information transferred into a computer from some external source, such as the keyboard, the mouse, a disk drive or a modem.

Insertion point

The place in a document where text you type will be added; you set it by clicking at the spot where you want to make the insertion. The insertion point is marked with a blinking vertical bar.

Installer

A program that you use to install or update your system software or to add resources such as networking software.

Integrated circuit

An electronic circuit entirely contained in a single piece of (IC)
semi-conducting material, usually silicon. Often referred to as a chip.

Interface

The way a computer communicates with external devices, such as a printer (through a printer port, or printer interface) or with you (through its user interface or human interface.

Internet

The worldwide network of computer networks that offers modem equipped computer users an inexpensive means of exchanging e-mail, conducting research and exploring for fun.

Interpersonal

Between persons. Of or involving relations between persons.

Intersection

Where a Column and a Row come together. For example, the cell address C3 is at the intersection of the third column from the left (Column 3) and Row 3 (The third row down).

Inventory

A complete and detailed list of articles. An inventory of property or goods tells how many there are of each article and what they are worth.
