Macintosh Duo220

A Macintosh computer that is a portable computer and a desktop computer in one. With the addition of a Monitor and a special "Docking Station" you can slide the portable computer into the slot in the Docking Station and you have your desktop computer.

Macintosh LCII

A Macintosh computer. Used in this classroom. A typical LCII has 25Mhz clock speed.

Macintosh LCIII

A Macintosh computer. Used in this classroom. A typical LCII has
33 Mhz clock speed.

Mail Merge

The production of form letters in which the names on a mailing list are seamlessly merged into a text document.

Main logic board

A circuit board that holds RAM, ROM, the microprocessor, custom integrated circuits, and other components that make the computer work.

Main memory

See random access memory.

Margin

The blank space around the printed or written area on a page or sheet.

Megabyte (MB)

1024 kilobytes, or 1,048,576 bytes.

Megahertz (Mhz)

Unit that measures frequency in millions of cycles per second.

Member

A registered user on a network who belongs to a group.

Memory

A hardware component of a computer system that can store information for later retrieval.

Memory cache

Memory that is set aside to increase efficiency and operating speed of the computer. Compare disk cache.

Menu

A list of items from which you can choose. Menus commonly appear when you press menu names in the menu bar or in a dialog box, You choose a command by dragging through the menu and releasing the mouse button when the command you want is highlighted.

Menu Bar

The white strip across the top of your Mac screen that contains the name of the menus available to you.

Menu name

A word, phrase, or icon in the menu bar or in a dialog box that gives you access to the menu. Pressing the menu name opens the menu.

Military Time

A way you can express time on your Macintosh using the 24 hour clock. 2 AM in military time is 02:00 hours, 6 o'clock PM is 18:00 hours.

Modem

Short for modulator/demodulator. A device that links the computer to other computers and information services over telephone lines.

Modem port

A socket on the computer's back panel marked by a telephone icon, used to connect a modem to the Mac.

Modified Date Field

A field that automatically enters a date , e.g. January 1, 1999 or 1/1/99 etc., when a database field is changed or modified. It also appears at the creation of a database record since this is a "modification".

Modified Time Field

A field that automatically enters the time a record or an individual field is changed in a ClarisWorks™ database and similar database application programs.

Monitor

See video monitor.

Mount

To make a disk or cartridge's icon appear on the desktop, so that its contents can be viewed upon opening.

Mouse

A device that controls the pointer on the screen.

Mouse button

The mechanical button on top of the mouse. In general, pressing the mouse button initiates some action on whatever is under the pointer on the screen, and releasing the button confirms the action.

Mouse Keys

An Easy Access feature that lets you use keys on the numeric keypad to control the pointer.

Mouseover

Placing your mouse cursor over a word you will see an image appear right below. This is called a mouse over. A mouse over is a way to see what information is in each section of the site without having to click into that section.

Mouse Pad

A piece of plastic or foam rubber that protects the mouse and the desk from each other. It also gives good traction to the mouse.

MS-DOS

Microsoft Disk Operating System, a commonly used computer operating system.

Multimedia

The merger of graphics, sound, text, and video into a single, often audience driven presentation.

Multiplication

Multiplication in spreadsheets is performed using the notation as follows: = A1 * B1, etc.

Multiplication Sign

Multiplication in spreadsheets is performed using the keyboard key.

Multitasking

Running more than one application (or performing more than one task) simultaneously on the computer, A function built into the new Mac OS 8 system software released July 24, 1997.
