Electronic Mail. Messages are read and or written on screen and sent across a network or through a modem.

Easy Access

A control panel that you use to adjust the keyboard so that you can control the pointer from the numeric keypad, type keyboard shortcuts without having to press the keys at the same time, and type very slowly. You also can make these keyboard adjustment.

Edit Menu

A menu that is available in most programs and lists editing commands, such as Cut, Copy and Paste.

Effective

Having an effect. Producing a result. Producing a definite or desired result.

Efficient

Directly producing an effect or result. Causative. Producing a desired effect.

Eight Bit Color

Describes a color or gray scale image or monitor setting, in which no more than 256 different colors or shades may appear on screen simultaneously.

Eject

To remove a disk from a disk drive.

ELF

Extremely Low Frequency radiation; energy between 60 Hz and 75 Hz generated by computer monitors and other appliances that create magnetic fields; accused by some of posing a health hazard.

EPS

Acronym for encapsulated PostScript, an image file format. Contains two parts: invisible Post Script information for printing at a printer's maximum resolution and a PICT file for displaying a 72 dpi representation on the monitor.

Error Message

A message displayed on the screen that tells you of an error or problem
in a program or in your communication with the computer system.

Ethernet

A high speed, widely used network type.

EtherTalk

A type of network connection (provided by EtherTalk software installed in your Mac) that allows you to use AppleTalk network services on an Ethernet network.

Everyone

A category of users from whom you can set access privileges to shared folders and disks. The category refers to anyone who connects to a computer as a guest or registered user.

Expansion card

A removable circuit board that plugs into one of the expansion slots in some models of Macs. Expansion cards enable the computer to use a special device or to perform an additional function.

Expansion slot

A long, rectangular socket on the main circuit board of some Macs into which you can install an expansion card that gives the computer additional capabilities.

Extended Keyboard

An enhanced, 101 - key keyboard that provides numeric and function keys; closely resembles keyboards of the standard enlarged DOS or AT style keyboard.

Extension

A startup program installed into the System folder that enhances the functions of a Mac. Examples: Screen savers, virus protectors, type enhancements.
