Cache

A holding or buffer area, generally RAM, in which frequently used data is stored for faster access.

Cache Card

A circuit board loaded with high-speed RAM chips for the purpose of storing frequently used computer instructions to produce an overall Macintosh speed boost.

Calculation

To perform a mathematical or logical function which will provide a result based on the factors contained within the calculation.

Calculation Field

A database field into which a formula can be entered.

Calculator

A standard Apple-supplied desk accessory that simulates a simple calculator. You can cut and paste to and from it.

Cancel

A button that appears in most dialog boxes, giving you the choice of canceling the command that generated the dialog box.

Caps Lock

A modifier key that, in addition to it's normal function of making any letter you type a capital, can be used as part of a keyboard command.

Card

A kind of board that plugs directly into a slot. Cards have connectors right on their edges, rather than at the end of a cable.

Cartridge Drive

A storage device, similar to a hard drive, in which the storage medium is a cartridge that can be removed.

CD-ROM

A Compact disk read-only-memory. A Kind of optical storage device used on the Mac and other computers

Cell

A location of a column and a row. In ClarisWorks™ and many other spreadsheet applications the column is designated by a Column letter and the row by a Row Number. For example, A3 indicates Column A Row 3.

Cell Address

A location of a column and a row. For example the address A3 means Column A , Row 3.

Character

A single letter, number, space or symbol.

Chip

An integrated electronic circuit etched into a piece of silicon. Usually a RAM or ROM device, a chip is made up of thousands of microscopic electronic components.

Chooser

A desk accessory used to tell the Macintosh which printer you want to use, what port it's connected to, whether background printing is turned on and whether AppleTalk is active or inactive.

Chooser Extension

A device driver, usually for a printer or fax modem, whose icon appears in the Chooser. Printing is turned on and whether AppleTalk is active or inactive.

Click

The basic selection technique on the Macintosh, involving one press and release of the mouse button.

Clip Art

A collection of prepackaged drawings that can be pasted or imported into a document.

Clipboard

The area of the Macintosh's memory that holds what you last cut or copied.

Clock Rate

The speed of a computer's computations usually measured in megahertz (MHz). The operations of a computer are synchronized to a quart crystal that pulses millions of times each second. These pulses determine things like how often a screen is redrawn.

Close Box

The little square at the upper left-hand corner of a window, which closes the window when clicked.

Code

Generally, the actual programmer written instructions in a computer program.

Column

In a spreadsheet, the column is designated by letter. The first column of a spreadsheet is A1, the second B1, the third C1, etc. until the forty column maximum in ClarisWorks™ is reached.

Command

The act of giving an instruction to your Macintosh, either by menu choice or by keystroke.

Command Key

The key on your keyboard that has the symbol æ symbol on it. A modifier key, the command key is used with another keystroke to activate some function of the Macintosh.

Commercial software

A software product sold through mail order or computer stores by for profit corporations.

Compression

A technique that reduces the size of a file by eliminating or encoding redundancies.

Concise

Expressing much in few words; brief but full of meaning.

Contrast

In image setting, the range between the lightest and darkest areas of an image file.

Control Key

A program, often with a single window, that allows you to change specific settings in a program or in the way the Macintosh looks or behaves.

Copy

To temporarily place selected text, numbers, etc. onto the computer's clipboard for use later.

Copy protection

An encoding scheme for software that prevents duplication. A copy protected program won't run unless its original floppy disk is inserted into the disk drive.

CPU

Acronym for Central Processing Unit: 1. The Motorola chip that is the brain of the Macintosh 2. The box portion of a Macintosh

Crash

A system malfunction in which the computer stops working and requires restarting.

Creation Date Field

A field that automatically enters a date , e.g. January 1, 1999 or 1/1/99 etc., when a database field is changed or modified. It also appears at the creation of a database record since this is a "modification."

CRT

Acronym for Cathode Ray Tube, the picture tube in a monitor.

Cursor

The arrow or cross-shaped pointer on the screen, its movement is controlled by the mouse.

Cut

To select and delete a specific item of text, pictures, etc. so that it can be placed into temporary storage in the computer's clipboard.

Cyberdog™

Apple's Internet surfing software, incorporating Web, FTP, newsgroup, Telnet and e-mail features into a sleek, Drag and drop based interface.
