location of a column and a row. In
ClarisWorks and many other spreadsheet
applications the column is designated by a Column
letter and the row by a Row Number. For example, A3
indicates Column A Row 3.

desk accessory used to tell the Macintosh which
printer you want to use, what port it's connected
to, whether background printing is turned on and
whether AppleTalk is active or inactive.

A
collection of prepackaged drawings that can be

The
area of the Macintosh's memory that holds what you

|
The
speed of a computer's computations usually measured
in megahertz (MHz). The operations of a computer
are synchronized to a quart crystal that pulses
millions of times each second. These pulses
determine things like how often a screen is
redrawn.

The
little square at the upper left-hand corner of a
window, which closes the window when
clicked.

|
Generally,
the actual programmer written instructions in a
computer program.

|
In
a spreadsheet, the column is designated by letter.
The first column of a spreadsheet is A1, the second
B1, the third C1, etc. until the forty column
maximum in ClarisWorks is reached.

The
act of giving an instruction to your Macintosh,
either by menu choice or by keystroke.

The
key on your keyboard that has the symbol æ

image setting, the range between the lightest and

A
program, often with a single window, that allows
you to change specific settings in a program or in
the way the Macintosh looks or behaves.

To
temporarily place selected text, numbers, etc. onto
the computer's clipboard for use later.

protection
|
An
encoding scheme for software that prevents
duplication. A copy protected program won't run
unless its original floppy disk is inserted into
the disk drive.

|
Acronym
for Central Processing Unit: 1. The Motorola chip
that is the brain of the Macintosh 2. The box
portion of a Macintosh

Crash
|
A
system malfunction in which the computer stops
working and requires restarting.

Creation
Date Field
|
A
field that automatically enters a date , e.g.
January 1, 1999 or 1/1/99 etc., when a database
field is changed or modified. It also appears at
the creation of a database record since this is a
"modification."

CRT
|
Acronym
for Cathode Ray Tube, the picture tube in a
monitor.

Cursor
|
The
arrow or cross-shaped pointer on the screen, its
movement is controlled by the mouse.

Cut
|
To
select and delete a specific item of text,
pictures, etc. so that it can be placed into
temporary storage in the computer's
clipboard.
