Radio Button

A small, round on screen button found in a set of two or more used to offer a mutually exclusive set of options. Radio buttons are often found
in dialog boxes where information is being requested of the user.

RAM
(Random Access Memory)

Random Access Memory. The part of a computer's memory available for programs and documents, also known as main memory. The contents of RAM are lost when the computer is turned off.

Read Me Document

A document that is included on some application program and system software disks to provide you with late-breaking information about the product.

ROM
(Read Only Memory)

Memory whose contents the computer can read, but not change. Information is placed into the read-only-memory only once, during manufacturing. The contents of ROM are not erased when the computer's power is turned off.

Read/Write Head

The sensor assembly on a hard drive (or other storage device) that actually stores and retrieves information from the disk surface.

Reboot

Restart the computer.

Registered Group

A group of registered users that is listed on a computer network.

Registered User

A network user whose name and password are listed on a computer on
the network. Usually, registered users have greater access privileges to shared folders and disks than do guest users.

Relational Database

A complex information list where each list of information (such as a mailing list) is interconnected to information on another list.

Remote Access

The technology for connecting to a networked or shared computer
from a remote location by modem.

Resize Box

The small square at the lower right corner of a window that, when dragged, changes the size and shape of the window.

Resource

A file is contained in the System Folder and that the computer uses for its information. System files and device drivers are examples of resources.

RGB Monitor

A type of color monitor that receives separate signals for each primary color (red, green and blue) and uses these signals to display color images.

RISC

Acronym for Reduced Instruction Set Computing. Describes the new generation of CPU chips at the heart of Apple's second generation computers, the Power PCs, which use a smaller set of commands.

ROM

Read Only Memory.

Router

A device that connect several different networks, intelligently choosing the most efficient route for a data packet to move from one address to another.

Row

In a spreadsheet, the row is horizontal and is designated by number.
The first row of a spreadsheet is 1. Rows continue to 500. The second location in a cell address is column A. A8 means column A row eight.

Ruler Bar

The bar usually at the top of a word processing window. This area is
used for the placement of tabs, indents and to help measure where the word appears on the page.

Rules

An authoritative regulation for action. A fixed principle that
determines conduct.
